The Four Returns model is a tool to identify the value of landscape restoration for all potential stakeholders involved. The returns from restoration are:
1) return of inspiration (beauty, a positive message, hope);
2) return of social capital (job creation, social cohesion);
3) return of natural capital (improved water availability, carbon capture, increased soil fertility);
4) return on investment (reduced risks, lower input costs, increased revenues).
We are currently using the tool in South Africa to build collective understanding between different stakeholder groups on the return from restoration. We develop business models with the four returns, based on for example eco-tourism, wildlife, sustainable agriculture, carbon and reduced flood risk for the insurance industry.
The tool is very simple and is easy to understand for everyone. We use it in our engagements with the farmers, communities, government, business and scientists and everyone understands it. It creates a common language to discuss and plan around the landscape. It ensures everybody feels their voice is heard and that their objectives can be captured.
