Mountains: a key for food security, healthy ecosystems and resilience to climate change

FAO Liaison Office for North America

Did you know that 329 million of the 793 million hungry live in mountain areas? That approximately 75% of the world’s accessible fresh water comes from forested watersheds? That mountain areas host the most sensitive indicators of climate change?

The achievement of several of SDG’s will largely depend on the sustainable development of mountain areas. Please join the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to discuss these important questions, as well as challenges and opportunities of mountains.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations stakeholders in Washington, DC are invited to an informal stakeholder briefing to meet with Mr Thomas Hofer, Team Leader (Watershed Management and Mountains) and Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, to present key results from a FAO’s study on vulnerability in mountain areas and to discuss the important role of mountains to eradicate hunger, sustain ecosystem services and build climate change resilience.
