According to the FAO, the number of chronically undernourished people in the world increased by almost 40 million in 2016 after a prolonged decline. Food insecurity is heightened by situations of conflict and exacerbated by climate-related shocks, such as droughts or floods. Additionally, agrarian-based livelihoods are becoming more and more unstable due to climate change and land degradation, increasing the vulnerability of these communities. What are the factors that undermine food security, and how can these be effectively addressed? What can be done to improve the nutritional status, particularly of vulnerable groups in developing countries? This roundtable will focus on how landscape strategies can strengthen food security and nutrition by helping vulnerable communities build socially, ecologically, and economically resilient communities.
The Roundtable is part of an on-going series of roundtable discussions focusing on climate change, agriculture, and landscapes. The series has been jointly organized by EcoAgriculture Partners and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations since 2009. This year’s series focuses on policy for integrated agricultural landscape management.
