Stories of Water

With agriculture a the primary user of freshwater worldwide, there is an abundance of stories on the hydrologic challenges farmers face and the creative ways with which they persevere. Water management is of prime importance to the Landscapes Initiative, as it often involves coordinating across spatial scales, across stakeholder groups, and across land use types. For the month of July, the New Agriculturist focused in on water and agriculture, providing snapshots of water management in parts of Africa, Latin America, and India. One article recounts how policies in Latin America are providing incentives for upstream farmers and ranchers to apply better management practices to ensure downstream water quality, tackling the issue at the scale of an entire watershed. In Uganda, collective action among livestock keepers is helping to conserve water and “green” the Sahel…literally.

Make sure to check out the entire issue of last month’s New Agriculturist to read more inspiring tales.
