As August progresses, issues related to the quantity and quality of water abound. Drought in the United States over the past couple of months have stirred questions on water scarcity, climate change, and crop production. During Rio+20, the Landscapes Blog reported on the United Nations-led Water Day, which brought some of these major concerns and potential actions to light. And, as this month comes to a close, the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) hosts World Water Week from the 26th-31st.
This year the theme is very close to home – Water and Food Security. Events throughout the week will address issues that are of particular relevance to the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative, such as the role of healthy ecosystems in maintaining watershed services, and how good governance at multiple levels can address some of the spatial challenges associated with water management. And in anticipation of World Water Week, SIWI is producing a capstone report outlining the multiple multiple interactions of water, widlife habitat, food production, and energy provision (among others). A preview article is available on their website.
In the meantime, the Landscapes Blog will be paying particular attention to news and publications related to water over the course of the month, so stay tuned.
