For the past few weeks we’ve been following organizations working in agriculture on the way to Rio+20. Last week, the blog highlighted the CGIAR Consortium‘s one stop shop for anything related to the research institutions and their activities in the lead-up to the UNCSD conference. And other organizations are producing reports and hosting side events. However, the government of Brazil has made it possible for individuals and organizations to add their voices now to the dialogue around the trajectory of sustainable development.
The Rio+20 Dialogues serve as a platform for discussion on the topics of forests, water, energy, poverty alleviation, and yes, food security and nutrition. They are intended to produce a series of recommendations to frame a formal three-hour plenary discussion inside the main venue of Rio+20 and will be presented to heads of state gathering in Brazil for the summit.
The Center on International Forestry Research (CIFOR) recently wrote a blog post sharing some of the points of discussion around forests for food security. And there are many more threads that align with the goals of the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative: integrated planning and cross-sector coherence for the global food security agenda; multiple pathways to a green economy and sustainable food system; and ensuring diversity of crops and agroecosystems. Make sure to add your recommendations and thoughts before the forum closes on Sunday, June 3rd (https://www.riodialogues.org).
