Every year at the beginning of September, eyes turn toward Stockholm and issues related to water during World Water Week. This year’s theme, Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships, reflects the need for participatory and cross-sectoral processes to manage such a vital and mobile resource. A report produced by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) explicitly explores cooperation between sectors at the water-food-energy nexus, between stakeholders even “outside the water box”, and between scales ranging from village to transboundary basin. Leading experts in the field contributed to the report, sharing their experiences and lessons in water cooperation.
Necessary to the health of both managed and natural systems, and increasingly coming under stress, water resources are also an important part of discussions on resilience and weathering shocks. A World Water Week seminar at held today on Achieving Water Resilience by Shift Thinking and Cross-sectorial Approaches captured this and pointed to experiences that can help address challenges across the sectoral, spatial, and temporal scales.
World Water Week runs through Friday, 6 September. The schedule of seminars and presentations can be found online, and includes a workshop on Bridging the Land-Water-Ecosystem Divides tomorrow.
