Land Security: Sustaining People, Soil, and Water

A recent report released by the Earth Security Initiative tackles land tenure and rights, both in how they relate to the people affected by land acquisitions and the consequences for natural systems. The Land Security Agenda laid out in the report calls for engaging all stakeholders in the discussions around investment, acquisition, and management of land to ensure long-term sustainability of “people, soil, and water.” Focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, the report provides an analysis of the risks to these three elements posed by so-called “land grabs,” case studies in the region, and recommendations for governance and investment. This discussion is critical in the context of landscapes for people, food and nature, where the state of governance and multi-stakeholder processes are an important factor in implementing landscape approaches.
