Managing for Ecosystems in Africa

Ecosystem management has been defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as

“an approach to natural resource management that focuses on sustaining ecosystems to meet both ecological and human needs in the future … integrating social, environmental and economic perspectives to managing geographically defined natural ecological systems.”

UNEP’s latest in a series of policy papers focuses on integrating ecosystem management with development objectives in Africa. Considering the strong prominence of agriculture and livestock production in African economies, this discussion presents the types of policies and institutional coordination necessary to preserving the services ecosystems provide at a geographically relevant scale. This approach is particularly relevant to an integrated agricultural landscape perspective.
