Nearly two years ago, the first Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security, and Climate Change Climate held in The Hague, Netherlands, charted a course to bring together the interests of the climate change, agriculture, and food security communities, seeking to achieve the same objectives of the Landscapes Initiative: enhance agricultural production, improve livelihoods, and protect the environment. The Roadmap produced at the meeting outlined recommendations for the policies and strategies, tools and technologies, financial instruments, and collaborative efforts necessary to making agriculture climate-smart. Representatives of national governments, International NGOs, and multilateral and United Nations institutions set goals for the way forward.
Now these leaders, practitioners, scientists, civil society, and private sector representatives have reconvened to share information and to build on the first conference by defining next steps and obtaining strong commitments from participants. Today marks the first day of the second Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security, and Climate Change, taking place in Hanoi, Vietnam. Discussions at the meeting will feed into the upcoming 18th Conference of the Parties at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in November. Moreover, this week’s conference aims to mainstream a broader landscape approach to capture synergies between sustainable land, agriculture, and forest management.
Climate change has been a topic often explored on the Landscapes Blog, and will follow the trajectory of the conference this week, so stay tuned.
