This week has been filled with discussions of drought -a critical concern in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, and expected to become more frequent and intense with climate change. A new grant from the African Water Facility is helping to address the impacts of drought and climate change on pastoral communities in Africa. The grant supports the Kenya Rainwater Association implement Integrated Rainwater Harvesting Management in Baringo, Kiambu West, and Laikipia district as a pilot strategy with potential for expansion in the Horn of Africa. Primarily aimed at improving water management to best address periods of water scarcity, the project melds farm-level technologies and activities with watershed conservation and rangeland rehabilitation, taking a broader view of land management and food security while attempting to reduce any conflicts. These activities are also intended to build long-term resilience to water resource concerns in these communities.
