While the Landscapes Blog has touched on many of the sustainable agriculture related events that occurred in Rio de Janeiro last month, it’s yet to highlight the day of events focused on one of the most important elements for agriculture: water.
UN-Water is the United Nations inter-agency coordination mechanism for all fresh-water related issues. On June 19, in conjunction with Rio+20, UN-Water held Water Day, a day devoted to the the following objectives:
- Demonstrate to the broad range of stakeholders, particularly decision makers, that some of the major challenges facing humanity today relate to water management; this will be based on findings of the major UN-Water reports.
- Identify major water issues that connect with the themes of the Rio+20 Conference, particularly its link with the notion of green economy.
- Focus on the means of implementation, especially the action areas where UN organizations and agencies can act together through UN-Water.
During Water Day, UN-Water released a status report based on the data collected from a global survey of countries. The report assesses the progress and outcomes of the application of integrated approaches to the development, management and use of water resources. Integrated approaches to development are vital for the management of both water and land. Without properly handling global issues relating to water, the world will struggle to adequately address the challenges faced in agriculture.
