One of the challenges inherent in something as multi-faceted as the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative, is developing a common language for communicating the various messages and ideas around integrated landscape approaches. We began the discussion on this topic looking at the terminology surrounding “landscapes for people, food and nature.” The Lexicon of Sustainability is an effort underway to build a common understanding of the vocabulary and concepts amongst practitioners in agriculture and food systems. In order to communicating these often complex ideas, the project began with a series of photographs, and has expanded to include short films, a website, and other media. Below is one of the early works explaining permaculture, which takes a “whole systems” approach to the design of agricultural landscapes. Visit the website for more information.
