Finding a Future Climate Match

Ever wonder what the climate will look in 10, 50, 100 years? Will corn be able to grow in the far northern reaches? Will the northern hemisphere play host to coffee and bananas? A spatial tool developed by the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) research program of the CGIAR tries to illustrate these shifts.

Developed back in 2011, the climate analogue tool uses multiple climate projections to provide insights into the vulnerability of crops to climate change, and to support evaluation of agricultural adaptation options for 2030 and beyond. It seeks to answer the question – where can we find areas today with similar climate of a specific place in the future?

As important as policy and institutions are for climate-proofing agriculture, the right information is needed to inform decisions and planning. The analogue tool can help inform such policy and landscape planning or management needed to adapt agricultural systems to a changing climate. Read more about the applications of the tool on the CCAFS blog.

What other tools can help farmers, land managers, and policy makers plan for future climate changes?
